IWHR held China-Mekong Advanced Technology Exchange Meeting on Integrated Watershed Management

On August 13, 2018, IWHR successfully held "China-Mekong Advanced Technology Exchange Meeting on Integrated Watershed Management”, which is part of the academic week activities for IWHR’s 60th anniversary. More than 20 foreign government officials and experts from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and the Mekong River Commission attended the meeting. IWHR Vice President Peng jing, Director Zhong Yong of the LMC, Wang Hongming, deputy director of the department of International Cooperation, Science and Cooperation of the ministry of Water Resources, and representatives of Mekong River countries attended the opening ceremony and delivered opening speeches. The meeting was also attended by Division of International Cooperation, and the Department of Hydraulics.

Under the guidance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Water Resources, the conference was jointly organized by IWHR and the Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Center. It aims to exchange advanced technologies and experiences in the comprehensive management of small watersheds in various countries, improve the level of water resources management and control. In the opening speech, Dr. Peng Jing, Vice President of IWHR, introduced the work related to the development of water ecological civilization under the guidance of the new development concept of the new era, and relevant technical fields and advantages of IWHR, as well as the series of academic activities of IWHR 60th anniversary. IWHR look forward to strengthening exchanges, sharing knowledge and experience and enhancing mutual trust and friendship. Mr. Wang Hongming introduced the positive measures of the Ministry of Water Resources in actively promoting cooperation between China and the Mekong River Basin countries. Mr. Zhong Yong emphasized the role of the Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Center in promoting mutual cooperation. The representatives of the Mekong River countries introduced the water resources situation and challenges facing the country, thanked IWHR for organizing a good platform for in-depth exchanges, and looked forward to further strengthening cooperation with China in the water field.

After the opening ceremony, Chinese and foreign experts made insightful reports on comprehensive management techniques and classic cases of flood control safety, water resources allocation, water environmental protection, water landscape and water culture display in small watersheds, and conducted lively discussions.

During the meeting, delegates also visited the Nanxugou Small Watershed Management Project in Mentougou District of Beijing and the Shanxi Reservoir Small Watershed Management Project in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, and conducted exchanges with Wenzhou Water Resources Bureau on the comprehensive management of small watersheds.
