2025-05-30

On May 21, during the 28th Congress and 93rd Annual Meeting of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), Dr. Liu Yi, Vice President of IWHR, met with a delegation from Sarawak Energy Berhad, led by its Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Haji Sharbini Suhaili.

The two sides have established multi-tiered, multi-dimensional cooperation across various fields, including hydropower, solar power, energy storage, and hydrogen energy. The Sarawak delegation was invited to witness the official launch of the report Smart Dams: Concept and Practice, a pioneering report systematically presenting the theory, methodology, and best practices of smart dams with IWHR taking the lead in the compilation, during the Congress.

Cooperation and knowledge sharing will be deepened in areas including digital twining of hydropower, cascade hydropower development in river basins, integrated hydropower-wind-solar projects, and dam safety, stated Dr. Liu Yi, who underscored IWHR’s strong commitment to collaboration with the Malaysia counterpart.

“Such efforts would contribute intellectual and technological support for the green and sustainable development of hydropower in both China and Malaysia, as well as globally,” he said.

During the meeting, the two sides held in-depth discussions on project collaboration, exchange visits, and the application of research outcomes.

Sarawak Energy Berhad, a key member of the International Hydropower Association whose Chinese office is stationed at IWHR, is Malaysia’s largest integrated energy development company. In September 2024, IWHR and Sarawak Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), laying the foundation for further cooperation.
