IWHR delegation shared China’s experiences and practices at the 2023 World Hydropower Congress, which was hosted from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 in Bali, Indonesia.
IWHR Vice President Dr. Liu Yi made a keynote speech on “Beyond hydropower: Integrated roles of hydropower and its sci-tech innovation,” introducing China’s pioneering work in smart water and digital twinning guided by the country’s Guideline for Water Governance and the idea of integrated watershed management. He shared China’s successful experiences in the comprehensive utilization of hydropower and related technological innovation, with examples such as the integrated management of the Yangtze River basin and the regulation of water and sediment in the Yellow River basin.
As the host of the China Office of the International Hydropower Association (IHA), IWHR is prepared to work together with the organization as a bridge and connector among global partners to improve hydropower efficiency and thus promote sustainable development worldwide, stated Dr. Liu.
Dr. Liu’s speech garnered attention to China’s hydropower practice and achievement, with experts inquiring about the overall planning of water resources, water environment and water ecosystem in the Yellow River basin, the balance between hydropower development and ecological flow, and the country’s water resource management policies in coping with climate change.
The 2023 World Hydropower Congress, organized by IHA, was jointly hosted by the Indonesian government and Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), an Indonesian state-owned electricity supply company. Under the theme of “Promoting Sustainable Growth,” the Congress consisted of an opening and closing ceremony, seven plenary sessions, 23 parallel sessions, seven workshops, and five thematic dialogues, delving into topics including “Access to Clean Energy for All,” “The Role of Hydropower in Global Water Resources Management,” “Hydropower and Net Zero Goals,” etc., aiming to promote knowledge sharing, capacity building and stakeholder dialogue. Around 1,000 industry experts and scholars worldwide attended the Congress.
