IWHR bolsters discussion on low-carbon development during CIFTIS

2022-09-23

Supported by IWHR, WFEO (World Federation of Engineering Organizations) hosted a high-level forum under the theme “Engineering Innovations Promoting Green and Low Carbon Development” on September 5, during the 2022 CIFTIS (China International Fair for Trade in Services).

It was the second time WFEO was invited to CIFTIS, a major exhibition of China’s opening-up and a platform for international exchanges.

The world is undergoing dramatic socioeconomic and ecological changes in the context of global warming. A revolution for green and low-carbon development across all sectors becomes essential for limiting global temperature rise to well below 1.5℃ above pre-industrial levels and achieving net zero emissions by mid-century. According to Dr. Peng Jing, IWHR Vice President and Chairwoman of WFEO’s Committee on Engineering for Innovative Technologies (CEIT), the Forum aimed to share China’s engineering practices in three areas – scientific and technological innovation, policy support and industrial development – for achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.

Round-table conferences were held during the Forum, gathering representatives from the China Association for Science and Technology, as well as universities, research institutes and business corporations to discuss China’s industrial transformation toward a green economy.

Starting from 2012, the CIFTIS has been successfully held for eight sessions, gaining joint support from WTO, UNCTAD, OECD, and several other international organizations. It has become the only comprehensive trade fair for trade in services covering the sector’s 12 major areas worldwide.
