The closing ceremony of the 2nd Asia International Water Week (AIWW) was held on March 15, where the AIWW flag was handed over to IWHR who will organize the next event.
IWHR President Dr. KUANG Shangfu took over the AIWW flag virtually
Officially kicking off on March 14, the 2nd AIWW gathered around 400 government officials, researchers from universities and research institutions, and representatives of business and international organizations for in-depth discussions in conservation and sustainable development of water resources, smart water management, climate adaptation, constructive public participation in water management, capacity building of young water professionals, etc., in order to explore solutions for the water problems Asian countries all face, especially in the context of COVID-19 and the on-going climate change.
A flagship event of the Asia Water Council (AWC), the AIWW was usually held every three years jointly by AWC and a host nation. The 2nd AIWW, initially scheduled for 2020, was postponed to this year due to the COVID-19 impact.
Upon the invitation of AWC, China became the host nation of the next AIWW, with IWHR as the organizer. According to the schedule of IWHR, the 3rd AIWW is expected to take place in 2024.
Under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the AIWW serves as a platform to engage multi-stakeholders to share insights and work together to tackle regional water problems in Asia. Forums, seminars, round-table conferences and expos are organized during each AIWW. The outcomes of AIWW are presented on the World Water Forum to make water issues in Asia visible on the global agenda.
