On October 9, 2014, a four-person delegation of ADB-Assam Integrated Flood and Riverbank Erosion Risk Management Program visited IWHR and discussed on issues related to flood forecast and river management. The delegation was headed by Dr. K. K. Dwivedi, chief executive officer of Flood & River Erosion Management Agency of Assam.
IWHR Vice President Jia Jinsheng welcomed the delegation at IWHR headquarters. He reviewed the communication and cooperation between IWHR and the Indian counterparts, and also briefed upon the research progress of IWHR in fields of flood control and drought relief, sediment research, river training, integrated water resources management, etc. As Dr. Jia noted, both China and India were confronted with several issues of mutual concern on the management of big rivers, and the visit would be a good opportunity for enhanced cooperation and exchanges between both sides.
Dr. Dwivedi thanked IWHR for the warm reception. He briefed upon the main task and purpose of the Integrated Flood and Riverbank Erosion Risk Management Program, and explained the importance of Brahmaputra River to India in terms of flood forecast, river training as well as river and soil conservation. He also expressed his wish to have long-term cooperate with IWHR, taking the meeting as an opportunity.
The two sides had a heated and in-depth discussion on food warning and forecast, structural and non-structural measures of river flood control, river channel scouring and reservoir sediment reduction, the application of remote sensing in flood management, and other related issues. Later, the delegation visited laboratories at both IWHR headquarters and Daxing Experimental Base.
