Biography
Graduated from MoscowPower Engineering Institute in 1958, Chen Houqun is an expert in seismic hydraulic structures in China. He has made creative contributions in theoretical research on seismic reinforcement of concrete dams and in solving key seismic issues of major projects, including Xinfengjiang, Ertan, Three Gorges, Xiaowan, Xiluodu, and Dagangshan Projects. He has presided over the drafting and revision of a number of standards in China, including “Code for Seismic Design of Hydraulic Structures”, chaired the construction of China’s first large-scale three-way simulation shaking table with six degree of freedom; and took the lead in China’s water sector to independently develop high-efficiency parallel computing programs based on the Tianhe-1 supercomputer and applied them into the high dam seismic safety research. He is for 20 years the Chinese technical leader and on-site organizer of the Sino-US seismic engineering cooperative research project “Dynamic Interaction of Arch Dams”.
