IWHR has been undertaking a provincial key project for the strategic research on inter-connection between rivers and lakes in Yunnan Province. Led by Professor Wang Hao of IWHR, who is an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, experts went across seven cities and prefectures to investigate the economic, social, water resources, water environment, water ecology and engineering condition. The investigation also summarizes the design and demand for each city and prefecture to connect the river and lake systems as well as a great deal of document deeded for the project.

This investigation has deepened the recognition about the special characteristic of water resources in plateau and mountainous areas of Yunnan Province and has confirmed the four-level approach to build the connection project and the level-by-level bottom-up approach to verify the necessity and feasibility of the project.
