Abstract: Based on review of remote sensing applications at home and abroad, this paper describes the great potential of remote sensing technology in the modern irrigation district management. The current progress of remote sensing applications in land use classification, crop growing pattern mapping, irrigated area monitoring and soil moisture retrieval is presented, with the existing shortcomings indicated and solution dis-cussed. The authors suggest that further studies on comprehensive data sharing platform for irrigation districts and scientific and technological aspects of remote sensing applications for modern irrigation district management are still needed.

Key words: remote sensing; land use classification; irrigated area monitoring; crop growing pattern mapping; soil moisture retrieval
