Abstract: The forced draft mechanical cooling tower is commonly used in the nuclear power plant, while the relevant research is relatively less, especially for the aerodynamic characteristics of the tower. This paper researches the aerodynamic characteristics of the forced draft mechanical cooling tower based on the physical model test and optimizes the design of the cooling tower. The results show that the total resistance coefficient increases with the convergent section height of tower increasing, and decreases with the angle α between convergent section and horizontal line and installation height of fill decreasing. The wind velocity distribution coefficient has nothing to do with the convergent section height. The smaller the angle α is, the bigger the distribution coefficient is. The lower the height of the fill is, the smaller the wind velocity distribution coefficient is.
Key words: the forced draft mechanical cooling tower, tower shape, resistance coefficient, wind velocity distribution uniformity
