Abstract: The dynamic response characteristics and the anti-seismic performance of core rock-fill dams and concrete faced rock-fill dams constructed in the region of high earthquake intensity are the marked focus in the field of hydropower engineering. In this paper, large-scale shaking table model tests for three real high rock-fill dams, the Shuangjiangkou core rock-fill dam, the Lianghekou rock-fill dam and the Houziyan concrete faced rock-fill dam, were performed firstly, and then, the dynamic response characteristics of high rock-fill dams in earthquake were studied deeply on the basis of contrast analysis to the test results. The same and different points for dynamic response characteristics of core rock-fill dam and concrete faced rock-fill dam are the key concerns in the study. The results show that both high core rock-fill dam and high concrete faced rock-fill dam have good anti-seismic performance; the influence law of reservoir impoundment on the changes of dam structure dynamic characteristic parameters for the two dam types are different; the protective effect of concrete face on the dam slope stability is obvious, suppressing the acceleration response of dam slope up-stream effectively; although the anti-seismic performance of concrete faced rock-fill dam is wonderful, the dynamic stability of dam in earthquake depends greatly on the design capabilities and the construction quality of concrete face.
