Abstract: Sea water desalination is an important way to solve islands' water supply. Pretreatment of seawater is the key part of desalinization, which can guarantee the normal operation of reverse osmosis (RO) desalination and extend the life of RO membranes and reduce the cost of sea water desalination. In this paper, a study is conducted on pretreatment of small-sized RO sea water desalinization on the islands by making a comparative analysis of pretreatment under different sea water intake, and using the research results in new energy independent power-grid desalination system in Dongmen islet. In the field trial operation, some good experiences have been gained, which can provide a reference and guidance for similar projects.
Key words: sea water desalinization, pretreatment, reverse osmosis membrane
