Abstract: In view of the disasters of erosion loss, the current status of sediments utilization and the necessity of optimal deployment of sediments, a framework of optimal deployment theory of sediments in basin has been constructed on the basis of optimal deployment principles of sediments in basin by large scale system disaggregation-coordination idea and the optimal sediments deployment methods for multi-objectives in subsystems of basin. An optimal deployment mathematical model of sediments in the upper and middle Yellow River basin was established which consists of interrelated sub-models at three grades: the subsystems, the subareas and the large scale system. The optimal deployment schemes of sediments were computed on various inflow conditions in the upper and middle Yellow River basin, the results were evaluated and the proposed schemes were provided accordingly which offered references to scientific management and harnessing of sediments in the river basin.

Key words: upper and middle Yellow River; optimal deployment theory; mathematical model; deployment scheme; management and harnessing of Yellow River
