Abstract: In this paper, the roles and potential impacts of the Poyang Lake Water Control Project construction were studied by conducting in-situ field investigation, historical and field data analysis and mathematical model prediction. The following topics were analyzed: the changing trend and development status of water resources of the Poyang Lake basin, the impacts of the Three Gorges Project operation on the changes of channel erosion and deposition in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and relations between the Yangtze River and Poyang Lake, impacts of the water control project on the water resources, flood control, water environment of the lake and fishery, the appropriate time of the project to close the gate for water storage and storage water level, the gate type and fish passage construction, etc. The study is intended to provide scientific and technological supports for initiating the Poyang Lake Water Control Project and its subsequent planning and designing.

Key words: Poyang Lake Water Control Project, relations between the Yangtze River and Poyang Lake, operation mode, roles and impacts of project
