Abstract: The paper presents a historical resume of the study on physical modelling of circulated heated water effluent from thermal/nuclear power plants in China Institute of Water Resources and Hydro-power Research. General features of thermo-hydraulic simulation of such cooling water circulation and treatment of the related scaling contradictions are briefly described. More complicated modelling with consideration of simulating windy, icing, waving, saltwater intrusting environment of the concerned water region are demonstrated in some detail. Emphasis is put on the understanding of some planning philosophy and its practical application. The methodology to approach the problems encountered in modelling is illustrated by the relevant case study.

Key words: physical modeling, cooling water circulation, similarity
